Role of Women in Nazi Germany

Women in Germany had very specific roles according to Hitler
  • They should be good mothers bring up children at home
  • No need for women to work, the man should provide for the family
  • Education taught them this lifestyle from an early age
Hitler's aim to put the his method progress
  • Passed law in 1933, The Encouragement of Marriage Law
    • Newlyweds received 1000 marks(around nine months salary)
    • The loan did not have to be completely repaid: 1 Child 25% reduction, 2 Children 50% reduction, and so forth
    • Goal was for everyone to have as many children as possible for as Germany grew under Hilter it would continually need more forces
Lifestyle for the Women
  • Women were not expected to wear make up or trousers
  • Only flat shoes were expected to be worn
  • Women were expected to to be "plump" because it was seen as better for child birth
  • Women were discouraged from smoking because it was seen as non-German to do so
In Germany it was not considered a social problem if an unmarried woman had a child. The Nazis established Lebensborn’s which were buildings where selected unmarried women could go to get pregnant by a "racially pure" SS man.

A common rhyme for the era was:
"Take hold of kettle, broom and pan,
Then you’ll surely get a man!
Shop and office leave alone, Your true life work lies at home."
