  • Most Western of any German States, located on Western boarder boarding Belgium and the Netherlands
  • Population 17,845,154 (2010) 
  • North Rhine-Westphalia is the most populous state of with four of the country's ten largest cities 
    • Cologne (Pop. 1,007,119)
    • Dusseldorf (Pop. 588,735)
    • Dortmund (Pop. 580,444)
    • Essen (Pop. 575,635)
While it houses a large metropolis area more than 70% of the state are forests, lakes, fields and pastures

  • GDP Per Capita is $42,193 USD
  • It has 30 of the 80 largest cities in Germany

  • Rhineland was apart of the Prussian Rhine province in the early 1800s. 
  • Westphalia was given to the Kingdom of Prussia after the Congress of Vienna also in the early 1800s. 
  • In 1947 the state was established with the two provinces along with the former state of Lippe. 
  • Majority of citizens are Roman Catholic(about 42%).
  • Home of the annual GamesCon which is the second largest gaming convention in the world.
  • Much countryside is committed to gardens, orchards, and commercial farmland.
